VR6 Engine tech / Low temp thermostat?
« on: August 15, 2021, 12:35:51 pm »
I'm concerned with VR6 AXK running hot in my van.

Have  anyone tried to use a lower temp thermostat in the EV? Does it need a matching temp fan switch too? Any errors are thrown by the ECU because of the lower temp?

Any info is much appreciated.

VR6 Engine tech / VR6 engine oil cooler for EV?
« on: August 15, 2021, 12:09:17 pm »
Does anyone know any options for the subject? Oil filter adapter plate for oil cooler hookup? Anything?

I think VR6 AXK (24 valves) runs hot and I'm concerned with the high temp in the engine compartment . Will be adding some air intake to get more air pulled into the engine compartment (not sure whether it would help to lower the temp thou).

If anyone has any ideas on engine oil cooler for these vans, please let me know.

Westfalia / EVC tent modification for window A/C unit?
« on: July 21, 2019, 06:57:40 pm »
A few years back I met a couple from Canada who had a Vanagon with interesting modification. They had some attachment on their tent's front window to which they attach a fabric hood going to a regular window A/C unit placed on top of the cabin in front of the tent. The whole construction can be installed or removed in a couple of minutes (I think the hood had a zipper as means to attaching to the tent). Back then I didn't pay much attention to it, but I recall they said that they didn't make it, but rather bought the pre-made fabric hood with attachments (less window A/C unit which  can be found anywhere), so somebody was producing it back then for Vanagon.

I spent some time fabricating a pipe to attach the exhaust of generic portable A/C unit to a roof fan. It worked (sort of), but portable A/C is very inefficient and pipe was getting hot, radiating much of the heat back to van. I have a very low clearance garage door, so cannot install any rooftop A/C units.

Does anyone seen or know if any place makes a tent modification to connect window A/C unit to tent front window? If someone will consider doing it, I'm interested in the pre-made prroduct (I'm not good in sewing and don't want to try to make it myself of the fear of ruining the tent).

Want to buy something? / 2.8L VR6 EuroVan crankcase breather hose
« on: December 01, 2015, 11:35:56 am »
Just noticed that it has developed a large crack... of course damn plastic hose is insanely expensive thanks to greedy VW. Does anyone have a spare one (used is fine) in their parts box? VAG P/N is 022-103-474-A. Let me know...

VR6 Engine tech / Re-programming 01P A/T to "sport mode" only?
« on: August 18, 2015, 02:17:07 pm »
I've read awhile ago some post either on ev_update or on vwvortex saying that 01P A/T can be forced to stay into "sport" shifting mode that would effectively disable "auto-adaptation" and "economical" modes. Apparently, poster claimed that VW dealer has ability to program some software settings into A/T that would do it. Does anyone have any information about it?

Winnebago "Full Campers" / Replacing popup top seal
« on: July 31, 2015, 06:05:32 pm »
My EVC popup roof seal started to disintegrate and I've decided to replace it. The replacement seal looks different from what was on the van before.
Here's a picture of two seals, the top one (with ventilation hole) is a replacement I got:

Does anyone knows if any of these are original Winnebago seals or both are aftermarket?

Also, when I've installed replacement, it turns out to be too short...

Did I install it incorrectly? Should I try to stretch it more to cover all the roof flange? Or just use a piece of old seal to cover the opening?

Winnebago "Full Campers" / Cracks in plastic EVC roof?
« on: June 24, 2015, 09:38:22 am »
I've heard some horror stories about cracks developing in EVC plastic roof. After installing Fan-tastic vent and three solar panels I'm starting to worry about how the roof is holding under that additional weight. Keeping my fingers crossed that I won't see any cracks, but still cannot ease my mind. If someone had cracks developed in EVC plastic roof, can you share under which circumstances it has happened?

Shiny things you no longer want / EVC stock Norcold fridge
« on: June 22, 2015, 11:21:46 am »
Please see pictures below. I didn't try to run it on propane, since my propane line was disconnected. Tried to turn it on 12VDC and 120VAC and got "nocold" (pun intended). Consider it as a non-working/broken, for parts only. I'm thinking of replacing it with something better, thus did no troubleshooting or attempt to repair.  Located in Eastern PA. Let me know if you are interested in the whole fridge or some of its parts.

Winnebago "Full Campers" / Suburban furnace thermostat replacement?
« on: June 22, 2015, 08:15:06 am »
If you have replaced your stock thermostat, please share your experience.

Which make/model did you use as a replacement for original Suburban furnace thermostat in EVC?
Looking for something which allows more adjusting,  i.e. cycling rate (ON/OFF cutoff range for set temperature).

Thanks,

Exterior / Winnebago EVC rust issues
« on: June 06, 2015, 07:24:05 pm »
Was planning to do some electrical upgrades on 2001 EVC and pulled out Suburban furnace.
One of the vent pipes installed by Winnebago was completely rusted out.

Also shoreline electrical outlet socket needs to be replaced because of the rust.
Here's what I found after pulling the old socket out:

Cole, I remember you had some rust issues in your vans before... Did you repair it yourself or have someone to do it? I never did any bodywork repairs before, I guess I need to start learning it...

***SOLD***

I have a special tool for replacing upper ball joints on VW EuroVan/Transporter. It can be used for both pulling out the old joint and pressing in a new one. It's known as Astra A-1108 or Sealey VSE 725.

Almost new condition - was used once to replace both upper ball joints on my 2001 EVC.  Made it a 5 minutes easy job.

It's yours for $200 shipped in the lower 48 states. Let me know if interested.

Turned out that my Norcold went into coma. I probably can fix it, but also would like to consider replacing it with something better and more efficient. I don't need it to run on LPG, a combination of 12VDC/110VAC would be fine if it can automatically detect and switch to 110VAC. Obviously, will try to install the largest capacity fridge that can fit. I can remove stock kitchen electrical panel and replace it with a slimmer one if it would help to get more space for a larger fridge.

If you have replaced your stock Norcold with something else in EVC , please share your experience.

Thanks!
