My 1993 EV won't start. It cranks nice (new battery). I've tried with booster and old battery as well. Triple checked wires and cleaned everything.

No dash lights (CEL or others). But radio, headlights, wipers all work.

Suggestions?

Westfalia / 1993 EV - Drum to disc brake conversion
« on: November 06, 2017, 01:30:25 pm »
Wondering if anybody has done a drum to disc brake conversion on a 1993 Eurovan?
I think I'm ready to do the project, and I'd love to get some info.

Westfalia / Ball joints, control arms (bushings), and tie rods
« on: September 07, 2017, 11:47:36 am »
I need to do my ball joints, control arms (bushings), and prob tie rods on my 1993 EV.

Wondering what I'm looking at in terms of the labor involved?  Also, would it be best to buy assemblies of the ball joint/control arm?

It isn't my daily driver, so I can take my time with the project.

How to "worst case scenario" force open or remove radiator vents on fans?
So I'm leaving on a roadtrip that I have had planned for a while... can't be missed.
One of my radiator fan vents will not open.  I can drive, and the temp seems a bit higher than normal (in between red dots in image).  Normally, I'd be at the line below those.
In a worst case scenario...
has anybody forced open the vents or completely removed the vents?
If so can you please advise on how you did it (mounting points, tools required)?  And discuss any effects by doing this?

Tracking down a smog check issue. Currently failing on CO 15mph in California.

Originally failed cause of NO, but my EV was running rough for a while... timing belt was done last year, but I think it ran poorly for a for up to two years prior (not a daily), hence Cat was prob shot. Cat replaced.

Then, I re-tested 3 times today. Two failed and one passed (but sadly, the pretest). CO was passing very low (plenty of room to spare) on the pre-test today (and CO passed on my first test 3 weeks ago. NO failed then replaced cat), but on the failed checks today, the CO was very high. The tech also said I was running a rich Air to Fuel ratio. 12.5:1 @ 15mph and 13.1 @ 25mph.

Weird that there was such a difference between the one that passed and the others. Values were in the passing range with room to spare, while the failed CO % was up to 3.65%.

Here is a link to a file from AirCare, an emissions shop in Canada (it is in my Google Drive). They show a case that indicates the IAT (air intake sensor) could be putting the early EVs into rich mode. This seems like my case, but I'm not sure.

Has anybody used this 500 ohm resistor fix? Has anybody heard of it?

Wondering if this is what my EV is experiencing? Or if something else is going on? The guy who did my cat mentioned that the O2 sensor didn't look OEM... but still, would really cause this type of fluctuation... unless it was defective/short?

Others I've talked to mentioned Timing, MAF (but I don't know if the EV has one), vacuum lines (though, this irregular pass/no pass seems weird to be the culprit) (or things listed elsewhere - MAP, TPS, ETC, Fuel injection).

1993 EV - I just noticed that one of my radiator fans on my EV never changes the angle of the blades.  I kind of felt around to see if I could manipulate it, but I don't want to break anything.

Does anybody have any advice on what to check?  Maybe there is a mechanical area that needs lube to facilitate the angle change?

Interior! / Exhaust in interior
« on: August 10, 2016, 09:27:13 pm »
So, I found out today that I have a small crack on my manifold/flange that connects to the exhaust directly under the front passenger area of the EV, 1993 Automatic.

Since I've been working on another project of removing the front carpet so I can install some FatMat, I've seen that there are virtually no openings to the area directly below.

My question is to anybody that knows the exhaust in 1993 EVs and is familiar with the floorboard/carpet/etc.... is there much of a chance of fumes entering the vehicle?

I intend to get it fixed.  I just can't do it now.  And I live in California where it has been pretty hot... so driving with windows down all the time isn't option.  I'm supposed to take a trip in a couple of weeks, but I want to be safe.

Want to buy something? / Wanted: Shifter knob/handle for 1993 EV
« on: August 08, 2016, 02:27:32 pm »
Wanted: Auto shifter knob/handle for 1993 EV.  Mine has a crack, still operates... but on the lookout for a new one.  Just the top handle part that attached with the allen screw.

Interior! / How to remove carpet in front of EV
« on: August 07, 2016, 11:55:58 am »
I am removing the front area carpet to install some sound deadener/insulation in the front of my EV. I'm not sure how to get the carpet up around the shifter and the e-brake.
Anybody have advice?

Inline 5cyl Petrol engine tech / 1993 EV - where is the EGR valve?
« on: August 04, 2016, 09:39:19 pm »
Can somebody help me out and tell me (photo or diagram or describe) where the EGR valve is?
I want to clean it out cause I didn't pass smog on a 15mph NO (in California). It is a high mileage EV so I want to take a look at the EGR valve anyway.

I swear I cannot find it... online or in the EV.

Inline 5cyl Petrol engine tech / Desperate about mpg on 93
« on: August 05, 2015, 08:47:43 pm »
Desperate on my 1993 EV West Weekender.  My initial fill up of my tank after some service (timing belt, water pump, serpentine, fuel system treatment, oil change) seems that I'm still getting pretty poor gas mileage.  It seems to be running fairly well, smooth.
Do you think that resetting the ECU would make any difference?  Are there any fuel system areas prone to leak?
