Engine Oil type
« on: November 03, 2015, 09:42:27 am »
Just curious what everybody is running for engine oil. I have a 1999 EV weekender and have been using Mobil1 0w40, I may run the Mobil1 5w40 next. I have a big adventure planned later this month from the UP of Michigan to Florida. Just starting to get the van ready and the oil change is due soon.
Thanks!
Neil.

If I still lived in my home State of South Dakota, which has Winters like Michigan, I would be running the 0w stuff in my EVC.
Thanks,

I was a die hard 5w30, I thought paying premium price for oil was a waste of money. I had a gallon of 0w40 for my passat so I used it in my 12v ev and you can definitely hear the difference. The 0w40 quiets the internal noise, and the extended mileage you can drive offsets the additional cost. So my opinion I would absolutely use the 0w.

I usually have 5 or 10w-30 in the summer months, 0w in the winter.

I have found the lower the viscosity the more vaporized oil in the air intake.  Anyone else have that issue?

Neil!

I have a 1999 MV and I live in the Denver area. I run 0w40 in the fall/winter months, and 5w40 in the summer/spring. The first number is the protection value at startup, the smaller the number the better in colder weather, so the zero weight is much better in the cold at protecting the engine on startup. This mix has served me very well in Colorado over the past 8 years of Eurovan ownership.
