Exterior / Re: swapping out bumper covers?

If I do this I probably won't go with the textured.  While at GoWesty, I noticed that they had some adhesion problems on the plastic bumper covers with the textured stuff.  They may have worked this out though.  I think a matt/semigloss finish on the bumper covers, grill and mirrors would work well.

Westfalia / Re: Yakima roof tracks on a Westfalia top.

Folds up nice, easily slips in under the rear platform.
Although I have a Winnebago, I use the two step version of that Cosco step ladder.  Both the two and three step are available at Walmart for under $20 the last time I checked.  I also use the two step to get me in the upper bed as I am 5'8" on a good day.

If I paint the pumpers then the two piece grill & mirrors get done in black too.

Exterior / swapping out bumper covers?
« on: September 14, 2015, 09:55:35 am »
Both my front and rear white bumper covers have cosmetic damage.  After seeing many EuroVans with black bumpers I was wondering if it would be more cost effective to just install new black or find used black bumper covers rather than repair the cosmetic damage and paint black.  Are black bumper covers available from VW or do they come primed?

Wow!! 74,948 Euro equals $84,629.03.  Must come with lifetime service and detailing.

Winnebago "Full Campers" / Inside rear view mirror?
« on: September 13, 2015, 11:42:55 am »
The mirror on my EVC is mounted off center and is not cleared by the sun visor when dropped down.  In addition it is a floppy model.  New ones are way too expensive.  While driving it back home from the NY I managed to twist it off. without damage, and was amazed at the panoramic front view through the windshield without the thing.

Three questions:
1. How does a person get the glued on windshield mount off to reposition?
2. What replacement models are available?
3. Can the mirror windshield mount be tightened?

Tires and wheels! / Re: The ultimate tire and wheel guide thread!

I have 225/70/16 BFG AT's on a set of 16" rims that came off of a late model Jetta.  Not sure what the ET is on them but I will look tonight and post.  They fit good with no problems upfront and only a small amount of rub on hard turns on the lower rear lip of the plastic bumper cover.  Just a little trim and it was all good.

Sorry not the best picks and the van is very dirty but I will snap some tonight that should show them a little better.
Do you have any lift with this setup and if so, how much?  Did you ever determine the ET on those wheels and are they adequate for the load of a EVC?  How has the increased height effected performance?

I am asking all these questions because I am looking at the Nokian WR G3 in the 225/70-16 (28.4") with a service rating of 107H for my next tire and maybe the GoWesty alloy wheels which have an ET of 38mm.  Although the Nokian WR G3 in 235/60-16 (27.1") and service rating of 104H would probably be a better choice and have been proven to fit with the GoWesty lift kit.  My current suspension is the Bilstein Sport shocks and only one rear left spring spacer to level the back and no change to the front torsion bars.

Another mod I had the welding shop do was to make a diamond plate propane cover. After crushing two and losing one I gave up and went to aluminum.  Waaaaay better and worth it considering what the stock covers cost.

Got any pictures of the diamond plate propane cover and hopefully the specifications?

VR6 Engine tech / Re: OBD Error Codes - Whatcha Got, Whatcha Know?

Mine recently threw a check engine light and since I had an appointment for an alignment and new shocks I would let the dealer took a look.  The code was P0440 (evap leak?).  Since I had recently overfilled the tank a couple of time and it took gas very slowly intermittently I thought I had wetted out the charcoal canister.  I told the dealer to just reset the code and we would deal with it if it threw the code again.  On the 50 mile drive home, no codes and it ran fine.  Time will tell.

I have found two sources that say to change the differential gear lube (not talking about the ATF) in the VW:

Wikipedia entry:
transaxle.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_01M_transmission
This transmission has a separate oil for the differential in the transmission, so there are two fluid levels to check. The differential fluid is checked by unscrewing the speed sensor gear assembly and use it as a dipstick. The speed sensor gear assembly is located on top of the transmission just above the right inner CV joint. Differential is emptied by removing the final drive cover on the rear of the transmission or by vacuum extraction through the speed sensor hole. Vacuum extraction is the more attractive option since a paper gasket seals the steel cover and access is very difficult. Filling is through the speed sensor hole. Differential oil capacity is about 1 liter. An acceptable differential oil is Redline synthetic MT-90 75W90 gear oil or any synthetic 75W90 GL5 gear oil. Be very careful not to introduce sand or dust into the differential, as the differential has no way to filter its oil

GoWesty Maintenance Schedule:
http://www.gowesty.com/library_article.php?id=1424
MILEAGE SERVICE
Every 15,000 miles - Trans fluid service
• Gear oil change in differential section
• Automatic trans service, fully synthetic ATF and filter

When I told the VW dealer to change out the differential lube in the transaxle I got a a short lecture from the male service advisor (not the one that normally helps me) on how there is no differential lube in the transmission.

Anybody please advise.

I think Cole needs a piqued knit polo shirt with an embroidered CaveVan logo in navy or black.  I need one too.

Wish I could just replace it with a dipstick but can't find any online.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Neil.
