Is the odometer information stored in the cluster or somewhere else?

Cole has at least 2 or 3 of this type of build documented on the Samba.  Here's one of them:

Thanks for the link - I've read it before but I paged through it again. Wasn't sure if the current iteration of the project was still venting as one big vent:

Just have a few questions for either Cole himself or owners of these vans.

1. For the GLS vans that are converted - how does the rear HVAC look and function?
2. Where does the air come out from? (Any photos of how its vented?)
3. Is it still possible to do this conversion or have many parts gone NLA?

Thanks!

How do we get this interior?

Specifically the glovebox on the long nose van.

How are people 3D scanning parts?

Which parts are most in need?

For the Sony XAV install what parts are needed? Is there a particular cage that is needed? Also, has anyone installed a rear view camera setup with this? I'm super excited that this would work without cutting the crossbar.

Just use the double din cage for a MKIV GTi or Jetta. It'll work fine. Some cutting and trimming of the bracket will be required, but its super minor work that I managed with just some scissors and sandpaper. I'm using a backup camera, its pointed a bit too downward, but its okay for my uses.

The reverse camera signal is on a 10 pin white connector, pin 7 on a black and blue wire. The connector is located behind the fusepanel on the driver side. I haven't tackled integrating the signal however.

Just wanted to chime in and say that if you wanted to retrofit the OEM seat heating knobs get the retrofit harness here: https://www.kufatec.de/shop/de/volkswagen/multivan-transporter/t4-7d/kabelsatz-sitzheizung-vw-t4-ab-bj.98

The trim plate around the radio itself is a generic VW fit kit.

The lower trim is just the stock trim cut down.

In the event you wanted to get the factory lower trim part w/o cutting it - 7D1 820 075 01C

Whelp. Luckily the VW reman engine had a 1 year warranty.

Dealer informed me yesterday that the van has a leaking head gasket. How can that happen on a reman long block after only a few thousand miles?

Thoughts?

The bellhousing pattern for the motors should be the same. The biggest concern would be about the electrical control and integration via can-bus that you would need to get it to work correctly. This is why manual swaps are inherently easier, you just have to get the motor to run, you don't have to worry about the gearbox talking to it as well.

The other physical issue you will run in to is the actual shape of the gearbox, the mounting points and the different axle system. The new transporter gearboxes use a splined stub shaft that sticks out an inch or two from the gearbox instead of the drive flanges and has an axle that the stub shaft inserts into. Still with a CV and ABS ring on the end. But the newer T5 and 6 vans have a different shape of the out splined connection at the hub than our T4s do. I'm attempting to get some of the T5 axles to see if the inner CV joints will swap over to the T4 axles shafts or the outer T4 joints over to the T5 shafts to make sure you can use the T4 hubs with a franken axle to make it work. The real question will be if the star pieces in the CV joint that slides on the shaft is the same size and spline count. Stay tuned, I'll update more when I know. From a guru or from trial and error.

Glad to know that someone is working on the problem. I might be interested in swapping from the 4 speed auto to something more modern (assuming its not more problematic). I wanted to go to the 5 or modified 6 speed manual gearbox for the 2001 VR6 that we have, but it seems like the gearbox has issues working with the ESP system. Is it possible to get MK60 ESP system to replace the existing module? I've read about people retrofitting the MK60 (which I believe is in the VW MK5 and later BMW e46 cars) in the e36 and early e46 cars; I'm curious if its possible to get it to work in the van.

I'm not sure about fitment personally, but my gut reaction would be to advise against it.

The transmissions in these vans are quite fragile and expensive to service/replace. I don't know how it'd respond to the additional power.

I finally was able to get the correct clips and they worked like a charm.  The jbweld works great with a day of curing.  Ensure you get original parts that match the part number and not the knock of clips from ebay that say they will work but they actually dont.  Once i got the original clips the panel popped on with ease.  The part number is below for the clips that work:

AUDI VOLKSWAGEN GENUINE OEM ORIGINAL 823867299 Interior Door Retainer Clips x25

Thanks, I'm about to give this a shot.
