I personally haven't heard of any bad experiences either way with the Bilsteins, but don't have any first hand experience with them myself - I went with the GW Fox shocks and so far I'm not impressed, especially given the price. I am going to be sending the fronts back to Fox for revalving ($35 per shock), to see if that helps improve the ride.

Thanks Steve

I've adjusted the front to several different heights, with the only change I THINK being a slight increase in stiffness with the bars tightened (increased ride height) like you said.

So unless I have a problematic torsion bar my money is on the shocks being the culprit for the feel of the suspension.

Hopefully a revalving is all that's needed.

Keep us posted on your results.

Westfalia / Where do you guys buy/find parts from?
« on: June 30, 2017, 04:31:54 pm »
Europarts-SD very competitive prices and knowledgeable guys specific to EVs.

AutohausAZ is consistently the best prices for OEM parts, however. I've found them to be 50% cheaper than anyone else on certain parts.

VR6 Engine tech / VR6 24v Serpentine Noise
« on: June 24, 2017, 02:28:47 pm »
So I replaced the periodically noisy N80 (only made the obvious clicking noise for a couple days and then went away), cleared the P0455 (large EVAP leak) code, and now CEL is back with a P0442 (small EVAP leak).

Am I wrong to think this is tied in to the P80 somehow since the code changed or should I just start down the smoke test route...

Also I only had access to a non-Bosch N80 since I'm out of town, not sure if this is possibly asking for a problem since I've read some stories of issues related to not using OEM.

Thanks!

Thank you for the feedback - I took a listen but was getting feedback from both the tensioner and water pump...wasn't sure if it could be one and resonating to the next pulley over.

Swapped both out, and after pulling them, the water pump was definitely on its way out and it didn't hurt changing the tensioner, though I don't think it was to the point of making the noise heard in the video.

Quiet as a whistle now, though it sounds like my N80 is on its way out.

01 Eurovan with a rattling-seque noise most noticeable at idle, on serpentine belt side of motor.

Can anyone weigh in on if the noise is the serpentine belt pulley?

Thanks!

FWIW - I installed 1.5" spacers and went with the GW Fox shocks and have found a less than desirable ride up front - the rears feel great, but the front feels underdamped - very soft.

Fox has no real solution for this aside from revalving the shocks which may or may not correct the feel the van has.

GoWesty's advice for me on this  was that using the torsion bar to achieve a lift in the front results in the suspension feeling soft with little rebound control. They suggest only lifting the front high enough to achieve the necessary wheel clearance.

Plenty of others on here have done this lift, but I have yet to hear of this issue being common, unless anyone out there has something to add to this??

Nice detective work! Thanks for that. Yeah my set came with zero instructions, luckily I saved the extra parts

Shiny things you no longer want / Re: Parting Out: 2003 Eurovan MV

Would you be interested in selling one of the door handle lock cylinder/cores? You can keep the door handle (door will open and latch fine without the lock cylinder) and I don't need a key.
Also, are the rear seat latches (that attach to the sides of the body) available? I have a GLS with a MV rear seat. The MV seat back is slightly narrower than the GLS, and my latches are too short and do not snap into the seat back.

Let me know!
Hey JVance I have a '93 Weekender I'm parting out - not sure if you're looking for T4 specifically but if a T3 will suffice feel free to PM me

Rcowan I haven't had this experience with squeaking in my Fox shocks - prior to doing the shocks which included doing upper and lower ball joints, I did have a nagging squeak. Not sure if it was the old shocks or the ball joints.

I've had my Fox shocks on for 6 months now and have had the same experience as you mech23 - I've reached out to Fox about having them adjusted/revalved, but have not heard back yet.  What was your experience with this? Cost? Did this fix the issue for you?

Depends on where you are cutting ;)

I use a sawzall, an airsaw, a cutoff wheel, a drill and two grinders to do all the top cuts.

In case anyone is looking for ball joint input, I did, as mentioned above, put the upper ball joint for the drivers side in the freezer, preheated the control arm knuckle with a propane torch, and used the lower control arm to press the joint in - 95% of the way.  Waaaay easier than the other side, though it still required a bit more hammering and a bit o heat on the knuckle to get the last 5% done.  Loosening the 24mm bolt with a standard box end wrench was a test in patience, but saved me the hassle of interference with the outer cv boot like i've seen some other forum threads discuss, when trying to use a socket for this job.

For me it was worth saving the $300-400 for the sealey ball joint press (and the likely long wait for it to ship from overseas) in getting this job done with a generic ball joint press, pickle fork, and some elbow grease.  Couple pictures attached of the process on this arm.
