Winnebago "Full Campers" / Re: EVC sliding door window?
« on: October 03, 2015, 03:53:32 pm »
My educated guess is that the EVC was delivered to Winnebago with the window in the slider already.  Otherwise why would Winnebago install a non-opening window there and opening window elsewhere in the EVC.  Especially why did they install an opening window above the refrigerator exhaust opening?  I would suspect that the difference in the weather stripping is because of the different style of window and not from different window openings.  But until I can get a look at the Weekender in person or someone with direct experience can comment, it is just an wildass guess.  Thanks for your comments.

The vans were long wheelbase panel vans (they received exclusive rights to these in the US, I understand), and Winnebago cut the door for the window.

The story goes that Winnnebago wanted a platform for the Rialta, and VW wanted a camper for the American market, so a deal was struck. One of these days, I need to research this for accuracy! :)

As for why Winnebago did this, if you own of of these, you know that Winnebago did some bizarre things when putting these together (can't open the undersink cabinet when the bed is down is just one of many....)

Can you get Fiamma accessories? Like the awning clips, magicrafter tie-down straps, etc? http://www.fiamma.com/EN/products/fiammastore/accessories/

Thanks for pointing out that the part numbers I listed on my post required you to select the firmness. I updated my post, and the answer is "soft" !

Hey - for $200 you also get the adhesive!  ;D

I went through foam "sticker shock", as well - here was my reasoning (keeping in mind I am NOT a very reasonable guy! :) )

  • Never wanted to do this again
  • Did not want it to fail is extreme temps (desert travel)
  • Did not want it to "whistle" (AKA not seal well)
  • Wanted it to be easy to install

Did I get all 4 points? YEP!! Only one I have not confirmed is the extreme temp point, but if you look at the specs on the foam - OMG!!!

If you have ANY questions about the project, do not hesitate to ask - the post on my blog was NOT designed to be all the information I lgeaned from this job - just the highlights.

I have to say that I am very jealous of this top - I have watched the YouTube videos from Colorado Camper Van, and they look very, very cool.

Would you happen to know if Colorado Camper Van will make more of these? I know I can ask THEM, but....  ;D

A few of the Amazon reviewers indicated that they are using them in RV's - looks pretty slick!

This one looks even smaller (3x5 inches): http://amzn.to/1JuArQo

You cannot view the content of this link without logging into Facebook, which some people do not use..... Can you post this elsewhere?

A new one from Amazon made my Suburban furnace cycle much less often - you can read about it here: http://1705.net/archives/612

I'll take a black one - I could only put the other one on the window! (picture coming soon - need to clean the rest of the back of the van!).

Accessories!!! I need the 7mm awning clips for my Fiamma - the "standard" awning clips sold by most RV places are too big.

Screen room additions, tie downs, etc, etc!

While you are at it, maybe become a Reimo dealer? https://www.reimo.com/en/. I mean really, look at all the cool stuff on just this page: https://www.reimo.com/en/D-accessories_store/DJ-camping_tableware_home_care/DJK-organizers_utensilos/

Do you speak German?  ;D

The fabric does seem quite high quality. What I don't like (and would attempt to remedy) is how fussy it is to keep out of the way of the latches when you are lowering it (westfalia designed this much better, at least on the EV Weekender), and how mildew stains are very difficult to remove. I *think* what happened to mine is that the tent was lowered wet one or more times, not allowed to dry, and mildew set in, staining the front of it pretty well.

Agreed - why there is no room in the front for the fabric is another "Winnebago mystery". I think that many "mildew" spots folks see in the front are actually grease from the latches...  :'( - I just think of all the spots as "travel badges".....  ;D

We use one of these lighters (black one), which feels very swanky when lighting the stove: http://amzn.to/1FZ1coN :)

Inline 5cyl Petrol engine tech / Re: New EVC - what to service
« on: June 12, 2015, 02:34:32 pm »
If your AC compressor seizes (not uncommon), you can bypass it with this belt.

That whole "if it is fine at 100K, it is OK" is kind of silly (IMHO) - our "perfectly fine" AT at 120K needed to be rebuilt, and I believe that if it had more regular transmission fluid changes, and/or a cooler, it "may" have lasted longer - who really knows.

I can say that the design of the AT cooler (where the AT is "cooled" by the engine coolant) is great for around town driving - your tranny fluid gets to proper temp quite quickly, and stays at a "reasonable" temperature. Going up mountain passes, hauling all the gear for a trip, etc will really get that fluid heating up, shortening its life, and the life of your tranny.

Adding a cooler also lowers the water temp when you are climbing passes (since it is not dealing with the extremely hot AT fluid in the stock tranny cooler), which is a nice side benefit.
