General Discussion / Re: Winter Camping and Skiing Colorado
« on: December 22, 2015, 09:12:34 am »
Unfortunately, A-Basin banned overnight camping from their lots years ago.  They allow camping for special events in the summer (like when the Pro Challenge bike race came through), but not in the winter.  I think Cement Creek campground is the only one open in the winter in Crested Butte.  The city gives out big fines for car camping anywhere near downtown so your best bet is to find an empty condo parking space or head to the National Forest.  Crested Butte's package deals are normally cheap to get lift tickets with lodging but that is typically if you stay there before Christmas.  - Bill

If you are heading to Winter Park or want to do some backcountry skiing, you can park at the top of the pass at Berthoud Pass.  There is a warming hut there you can use as well.  If you want a smaller resort, you could camp at the Boulder Adventure Lodge and head to Eldora to ski.  Otherwise, there is a vast amount of National Forest land where you could camp, especially between Keystone/A-Basin and Montezuma and also off of Hwy 9 between Breckenridge and Fairplay.  - Bill

I am wondering if you think a decoupler could be added, similar to the Vanagon version?  I have not seen any mention of a decoupler being used on any of the European T4s.  - Bill

That van is sweet.  I really like the unique pop-top, interior camper layout, wheels, etc...  Do you ever come across parts for the LHD vans as well?  I can find the RHD factory front rubber cab mats but am having a hard time locating one for a LHD vehicle.  Let me know if you ever come across one.  Thanks, Bill

Westfalia / Re: Replacing the carpet with vinyl (or other) flooring.
« on: November 19, 2015, 08:47:59 am »
I have used PL Construction Adhesive with great success on two different Vanagons where I replaced the carpet with the VW stock rubber flooring and vinyl pedestals.  I was recommended this product by a shop owner out of New York who also used it on all his vans.

Inline 5cyl Petrol engine tech / ACU engine into an AAF engine van
« on: November 18, 2015, 09:14:14 am »
I am looking into placing an ACU engine into an AAF engine van since my engine has 250k miles on it now and Cole reports its the slowest 93 of the 3 vans he has from that same year...

The ACU engine came with the 1995 campers and the AAF engine came in the 1993-95 2.5L vans.  My van is manual and the ACU I am considering is coming from an automatic van.  I would be getting the complete engine, exhaust manifold, downpipe, wiring harness, and ECU.

This will only gain a small increase in horsepower but would replace the old style exhaust manifold with a nicer (upgraded version), increase the compression ratio, and would add a knock sensor.  It should be a bolt-in but I am asking the forum members if there are any pitfalls that I am unaware of?  If so, please let me know.

Thanks,
Bill

Good point!  I am looking to get $500 for all 5 wheels / tires.

Thanks for the updates.  I really like the brake booster mod.  As I am still more familiar with Vanagons, the one thing that stands out in your post is that VW used plastic tanks for a long time (including the hot coolant tank) when a metal tank would have worked much better.  Rocky Mountain Westy now makes a nice metal (aluminum) coolant expansion tank that some of the other major vendors are now selling.  I hope this kind of upgrade is available in the future for us EV owners.

Shiny things you no longer want / 15" Eurovan wheels with Geolander tires
« on: October 12, 2015, 09:14:35 am »
Five (5) Eurovan 15" wheels (painted black) with Geolander tires.  Tires have less than 5,000 miles on them.  I just upgraded to 16" wheels which allows installation of the 2001-03 disc brakes so these nice wheels must go!  Price is firm.  Available for pick up in Aurora, Boulder, or Loveland (Colorado).

Sorry to hear and read about your tragic story.  I ordered many parts from you back when I converted a Syncro Adventurewagen to a 1.9TD AAZ a while back now.  Thanks for opening up your blog to everyone.  I spent way too much time reading your posts tonight, and was especially interested in your personal van.  That 400,000 mile mark is inspiring.

CaveVan Stuff / Re: Free CaveVan Stickers
« on: September 22, 2015, 03:48:14 pm »
Good looking stickers!  I am wondering out loud about something... Awhile back you could get samba stickers with your username on them so that when you saw someone driving down the road, you could see that it was a fellow member.  Could we add something like this to the Cavevan stickers?  It would be cool to identify with fellow forum users/helpers.  - Bill

If you find an answer to this somewhere else, please post.  I would like to add a front bull bar and side bars as well.

It's ok with me to post a ton of pictures.  Obviously this upgrade also means we are switching out the wheels from 15" to 16".
