Title: automatic transmission manual shift

My 97 had a "new" transmission installed by PO.  I was going through the mountain here in Idaho and I could not manually shift the transmission into a lower gear, the side button would not depress for me?  it runs great, but am puzzled?  Anyone else experience this or have any ideas on what to do?

IIRC, you don't push the button to go into the lower gears except from 2nd to 1st.
