« on: August 23, 2019, 11:34:34 am »
I'm going to do a manual swap on my 24V VR6 Eurovan, and wondering if anyone knows who gives the best core price for my old auto?

Shiny things you no longer want / FS: 2001 VW Eurovan MV with Upgrades
« on: April 22, 2019, 03:33:46 pm »
For Sale:  2001 VW Eurovan MV with 142k miles  $10,995

This is the last (and best) version of the Eurovan, with the 200hp 24 Valve VR6 engine and electronic differential lock for snow.  This van has great power and acceleration, while still getting good fuel economy.  It drives really well – these later versions also had larger, better brakes.  The transmission was replaced by the previous owners.  AC blows cold, heated seats work great,  . The MV model has removable rear facing jump seats and a pop up table, as well as the rear bench that easily folds down into a bed, or completely removes if you want to haul a motorcycle or large loads.  These vehicles are super utilitarian and useful.   It also has upgraded heavy duty vinyl-rubber mats front and rear.  This one has a front sunroof, too which is a rare and desirable option.  Absolutely NO RUST anywhere.  Not even around the windshield which is super common.  This was purchased in California and driven to Colorado, so it's never been in the rust-belt.

This one was owned by an enthusiast that did some popular and very useful upgrades.  It has been lifted 1.5” for better clearance on remote access roads, and has brand new all-terrain tires that are slightly larger diameter than the original tires.  It drives and handles well, and has more clearance than many modern SUVs.  The windows have been tinted, which keeps the temps down camping in the sunshine, but also allows for privacy in campgrounds.  The front passenger seat had a swivel added, so it can pivot around so when camping you can all sit facing each other – it's a really nice upgrade.  The ARB Touring awning is great to have.  It gives you instant shade and shelter anywhere you park – camping or tailgating or wherever.  A 3 crossbar Yakima roof rack is installed, and has a basket as well – this makes hauling gear as well as canoes, kayaks or even lumber easy to do.  A rear hatch Fiamm 3 bicycle rack is installed along with heavy duty hatch struts so the hatch is still easy to open and stays up even with the extra weight of the rack.

It's not perfect (no 18 year old vehicle can be) – exterior cosmetics – it has some very minor scratches and dings, and the rebuilt transmission has a valve body that can stick and cause very firm shifts and noise.  They attribute this to it not being driven enough and the shop believes it will go away with regular use.  The drivers window has started working intermittently.  Drivers mirror doesn't work with remote.  One headlight has a small hole.

Extras included – a set of almost new (less than 1 season of use) snow tires, and a swivel mount for the drivers seat.  There is another rear facing jump seat available, too (though most people find it's easiest to just use one and have the extra space all the time).

A very fair price for a Eurovan with lower miles (142k) and thousands in upgrades.  Easy to drive, park, camp and own.  I would jump in this van and drive anywhere, in any weather, right now.

Interior! / Subwoofer placement?
« on: September 19, 2018, 08:35:07 am »
So, I picked up a 2002 EV to use as a shop van.  Great shape for that intended use, has an upgraded head unit (good enough for me), and new speakers on the way from Crutchfield.  However, I would like to install a small subwoofer, but not like to take up too much space.

I put one of those low profile ones in my E250 that Vanagon guys put under the front seats, but I don't think they will fit under the EV seat bases.  I could build one inside the seat base as an enclosure, but I'm looking for quick and easy here.  Think 'better' sound, not 'awesome' sound.

My other passing thought was to bolt it to the back of the front passenger seat base, but not sure about that.  With swivels, it might get in the way.

The rear facing 2 post mount seats are spoken for by the potential buyer of the Eurovan I have listed for sale.  I'll let you know if they change their mind or a different buyer doesn't want them.

Shiny things you no longer want / 2001 VW Eurovan Pop Top
« on: September 07, 2017, 04:20:01 pm »
For Sale: 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan MV Pop Top Westfalia $16,900
This is a great Eurovan. It is a 2001 with the powerful VR6 engine, front wheel drive of course, so it is great in the snow, but still gets good fuel economy for a van. The automatic transmissions are the achilles heel of these vans – if it hasn't been replaced, it will fail in the future (to the tune of about $4000). This one has JUST been replaced with an upgraded and rebuilt unit, so you never have to worry about it again. It also comes with a binder full of receipts for service work. It has also just had an oil and filter change, air filter and climate filter replaced, so it is super ready to hit the road and travel, camp or commute!
Eurovans are wonderful vehicles – a minivan with lots of interior/cargo space, and with the pop top and fold down rear bed, it is an instant camper that you can drive every day in downtown traffic because it is small. This setup has two front seats with a 3 person rear seat that folds down into a queen-sized bed. You can also add two rear facing jump seats – the mounts are on the front seats and under the flooring – I can include two jump seats for full price offer. The cargo area carpet has been upgraded to heavy duty vinyl flooring that is super easy to clean and holds up better than any carpet.
Tires are good, it drives very well, shifts are firm, brakes are good, shocks are good – its ready to go. There are some scratches and knicks in the paint, but it's 16 years old, and you have to expect some wear. This one started life as an MV so it has rear Air Conditioning (which the Westy's did not have), and then got a Westfalia pop top added on later, so it's the best of both worlds.
People advertise these for $25-$30k and people buy them!! This is your chance to get a super solid one with a new transmission for a totally fair price.

Show off your projects here! / Re: The Thermos Project

Hey Bill -

Sorry it's been a year(!) since I posted up here - didn't realize there was a reply.

Anyway, I made the panels really, really easily.  I used Masonite board, easy to cut to shape.  I put some conduit clamps on the bottom to act as hinges so they can flip open and hang there, or be completely removed easily enough.  I drilled a little finger hole to pull them open, and I used velcro pieces (glued to the plastic on the seat) to hold them shut.  Worked surprisingly well.  I also used the same bedliner to coat them that I used for the front handles.  Pretty simple process, and only cost a few dollars and a few hours.  Looks 1,000,000 times better than having gaping holes there, IMO.

2002 Eurovan MV Camper Pop Top Westfalia

NEW:
Oversized Engine Battery $125
Air Filter
Climate Filter
Oil and Filter
Fuel Filter
Platinum Spark Plugs
Wipers
Cat-back exhaust system (OE, not muffler shop) $400
New Brake Rotors and Pads, Front AND Rear $500
1.5” suspension lift – correct way to get van off bump stops and handle better, as well as traverse gravel roads to great camping spots much easier $200
215/70R16 All Terrain Truck Tires – 60k mile warranty $500
Comprehensive Coolant flush and new coolant
Cleaned MAF sensor
New radiator fan resistor
Comes with additional top tent and seal (current one has no holes, but two repaired areas)
Heavy duty front rubber mats $100
Marine vinyl flooring in all cargo area $200

This is a one owner, local from new Westfalia. This Van was completely stripped on the inside and cleaned top to bottom. Carpets, seats and cushions were removed, power-washed and shampooed. All surfaces (even the metal under the carpets!) wiped and cleaned. Curtains all there (washed and rebuilt with new hangers, new sewing), tent fabric has two repaired holes, but functions perfectly.
This is the last version of the Eurovan, with the 200hp 24 Valve VR6 engine and electronic differential lock for snow – this has power and goes great, while still getting good fuel economy. The transmission was replaced by the original owners at 60k miles with an upgraded one. No issues since. Good shocks, ball joints, tie rods, etc. all around – Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks in the rear – perfect for camping loads. Trailer hitch perfect for bike racks or small trailers. AC blows cold, stereo works great.
Needs – exterior cosmetics – it has some scrapes and small dents, and the windshield is cracked. I am planning on replacing the windshield as soon as the local shop gets one in. One of the rear ABS speed sensor wires is cut so a light is on. I didn't have time to repair it when I did the brakes, but will be doing it shortly. The dents aren't that bad, and I greatly prefer a vehicle with super solid mechanicals over one that looks pretty but needs lots and lots of work (you will find lots of those for sale online for $20k+). This has been a local Colorado van since new, and has no rust.

I am asking $17,995 which is a very fair price for a Eurovan Westfalia with upgrades and lots of new parts that any van you buy will likely need – this one has them taken care of and won't cost you $5k+ more after you get it home. I would jump in this van and drive anywhere, in any weather, right now.

Partial trade of a Honda Element AWD considered.
