Exterior / Re: Which awning to get for EVC?

Old thread, but maybe better to keep awning info under one thread?

Has anybody seen this new ARB awning?  I like the ARB but not sure I want the bag.

Nelmer:   I am wondering if the stock dash location is ideal.  ...how much of an issue is created by being so far out of the line of sight?  Thinking a "safer" location for a screen like this might actually be sitting on the dash?

I just traveled to pick up my "new" EV and took my first road trip home.  First thing after buying it, I mounted my cell for navigation.  I snagged a cheap (but strong) vent mounted magnet at Walmart and it's worked well mounted on the far left center vent.  Keeps the cell cool too.  Reduced air flow is acceptable there.

For me, the position just right of the steering wheel and around dash height seems best for a screen in my various vehicles.  To the degree that it's lower or further to the right, I'm losing functionality, access and/or eyes too far off the road.

So, it seems that the double DIN spot will not be very good for navigation. Too far, like you said.  I will probably do it anyway,  because , where else can the stereo go? - if you want a clean pro looking install, that is.

And if the NAV screen distance proves to be as compromised as I expect, then I can always keep my cell on the vent for that.   The installed screen will still be useful for everything else, it's the modern I/O.

What do you guys who already have screens installed in the stereo zone think?  Safe and comfortable for navigation?

Want to buy something? / WTB 01-03 Weekender
« on: May 11, 2017, 09:05:59 am »
I'm ready to pull the trigger.  I hope to find a good condition late Weekender with medium to lower mileage.   Tricky on that since I don't want to pay a premium for low mileage and then $spend big for all the work it has coming up.  Yet it seems wise to stay well below 200K too so it will keep a good value for some time and be worth investing in for improvements.

So, anybody got something in your sights (or garage) that you think I should check out?  I'm ready to go, will drive the van back to New Mexico or Texas (have home-bases in both states)  with it for any work needed.  Or take it to Cole.....so closer to NM/TX is good, but quality/value is top priority.

Appreciate it!

Hey there.  After a couple years of looking at vans - Transits, Promasters and Sprinters, I've decided to stay small and just go with the latest available version of the original van inspiration and get an EV to set up for our camping travels.  Pretty much settled on a 2001-2003 Weekender.

Exploring EVWs I've seen xtremejeep/CaveVan's projects as I've lurked and now I see this forum.  Excellent!   Seems that as useful as Samba (and Vortex) are for general stuff this is the place to connect for EVs   - thanks, Cole for doing this !

I'm going to be zeroing in on a van in the next few weeks to buy and hope to be able to check my options with you guys here.   I also hope to be able to make use of CaveVan for any upgrading that I can farm out...kinda hoping for a ruined pop-tent so I can get one of the big three windows !

I wonder if it's better to ask for advice here or on the WTB discussions?

Cheers,
Steve
