My wife and I took our fully loaded EVC out this weekend.  While going over some moderate passes in the Siskiyou Mountains my Garmin ecoRoute indicated temperatures as high as 250 degrees F.  Is that a safe operating temperature?  Also intake air temperature was well in excess of 140 degrees F.

Some of you engine builders must have the answer to this.

No codes and no alarms but isn't 250 degrees F too high?  What else should I check or do?

Was the 250 your water temp?  That seems high, but I have never used a Garmin to monitor the systems- most use the Scangauge.  Maybe more info would help.

It's the coolant temperature and the intake air temperature.  Both the Garmin and Scanguage take their readings off the OBDII so it would be the same number.

If it was warm out the intake temp may be right. It's hot in that engine compartment and doesn't take long for the intake temps to go above 100. The water temp seems high to me. Maybe somebody else has more info about it. I'm not sure what's normal in the mountains-we don't have many here in the UP of Michigan.  Normally my water temp in the summer was 180-220.

The coolant temperature does seem high - but I can't recall the coolant temperature ever spiking on my van during trips over the rockies. Needle stays up at 190 and doesn't move much at all.

High coolant temp could be a sign of a radiator fan failing (or the fan resistors under the bumper). Turning on the AC while driving, should be putting both radiator fans on  -- and increasing the airflow through the radiator (and bring temps down).

If you want it to run cooler you can use a lower temperature radiator switch from a 2.0 beetle. I think that is a 150 and the van uses a 180deg. Not sure why you would want to do that but it works.

I will look. Usally the stat would be paired within a few degrees to the radiator fan switch but I would not bother with the thermostat unless you are ready to replace the housing because the plastic gets old and it is breaks easily ("crack pipe"). 250deg is pretty high can you hear your radiator fan running? Is it consistantly that  high?
