what do rear shocks do on axle with leaf springs

My 02 Itasca Sunstar makes quite a bang at the rear axle over rough roads. It's a solid axle with leaf springs shackled to it along with shocks mounted. I'm trying to figure out how shocks work with the leaf springs vs regular coil springs and if they will dampen the jolt over a bump. The shocks are old (original?) Bilsteins and possible worn out but I can't test by pushing down on a bumper so I"m wondering if replacing them will be of any help. Anyone have some thoughts or experience with this?
