Title: Scamper Van
Post by: wollbs on September 19, 2017, 10:32:36 pm
Hey all,

Newbie here starting my 1999 Eurovan MV poptop project.  I bought this 170,000 mile salvage (front end damage, PO fixed it nicely) for $7500.  Immediately I did alignment, tires, fixed the HVAC, added stereo, added lift shocks for the poptop, and cleared all of the CEL codes.  Now onto the customization.

Like Cole, I used sketchup to do some concept designs, see pics.  I plan to strip the interior panels, insulate/sound deaden, replace the panels and install cabinets down the driver's side.  Notice the 2-person 'flip and fold' freedman seat, they retail for ~1000, but I picked up a used one for $75.  This is where our 6y/o daughter will ride, in the center of the van, right behind the front seats for easy conversation and snack handoffs.

I added a $50 awning consisting of bolt attachement points, a tarp, and some kelty extendable poles from an REI sale.  It requires work to set up, but it has the option of 1/2 length awning, then the rest of the tarp goes vertically downward creating a nice wind/visual screen.

Speaking of holes in the fiberglass poptop, I have some holes that I need to fill, and some bad clearcoat on the top, so I was thinking of painting the top a light color for a two-tone look, maybe a light cream or white.  Any thoughts on that idea?

The actual pictures below show our 3 week road trip from San Fran to British Columbia.  Audio books and headphones for the daughter made the trip possible.  She listened to the original wizard of oz novel 5 times on this trip (as well as many other books).

I look forward to sharing the progress, and I would love to hear any comments on my seating/bed/cabinet ideas.  I plan to break ground in a few months.  I never do this kind of extended planning, but it seems to make sense if it saves me money and redo work later on.

Yeah Eurovans!
Brandon

I neglected to show the full bed in the back.  Here is how it will convert from driving to sleeping mode.  This requires moving the kids booster seat.

I am planning for it to convert into another configuration where the front half of the bed will be 'split', allowing one long and one short sleeper in the back (wife and daughter) , and i can leave the seats in their upright position with the kids seat still clipped in.  This requires me to sleep upstairs, but I kindof prefer it because I dont get kicked, and I like the cool air flowing through.  I probably need a new 3 window tent, as my tattered old 2 window is anything but inspiring.

Wish me luck.

Nice job on the SketchUp models.  I look forward to seeing them become the real thing.

Im about to get this steering wheel, heated seats, and a passenger side dash cubby to install when i replace the heater core (not looking forward to full dashboard removal, but oh well...i need heat).  Is there anything else i should do while in there(i already replaced the blower)? I installed the dual seat heaters, thanks Cole. I also received the lift spacers and shocks, but they will have to wait a few weeks for install.

I just picked up the scamper van from the tint place. Apparently $500 to tint all the windows with ceramic is a good deal. It couldnt look better, 15% on all the rear windows and sliders, 35% up front. I almost wish I went darker, but I know i'll appreciate the views and night visibility. It smells like someone smoked a joint in my car, Im trying to figure whether the tint guys were toking up while tinting or is this the way it smells when the tint adhesive dries?

Looking at that last picture makes me want to paint the wheel covers black until I do something better. should i leave the VW emblem shiny or paint it black too?

Here is a pic of the new stereo and seat heater switches. Im awaiting a replacement vent. The two holes will be a switch (to light my dash cubby and floarboards) and double USB 2.1A outlet to charge our phones. This will free up the standard 12v outlet for other things.

Now i just need to find the darn vagcom cover.

Im sitting in the van now with a warm backside, life is good!

I love how spacious that interior is. Great stuff, Woll. What else are you planning to do to it?
