The advantage is twofold. 1) if you wire your stereo to the house battery, you can use them both when the van is parked and off. 2) if you wire the stereo to ignition battery (because it is stock configuration and I dont have to turn off the stereo when i turn off the van)and amp to house battery (which is super easy wiring being under the other seat) you wont drain your starter battery as much when you run the stereo when the van is parked and off. I chose option 2.

I fit one easily under the passenger seat of my 99 mv. It was a powered 8” unit, all in one, the whole thing is 3”. i powered it off the house battery, so i can run it while camping.

Share your adventures! / slipping tranny? 99 MV VR6 automatic
« on: December 14, 2017, 11:49:21 am »
Im really hoping that my tranny isnt the problem. description of issue: during 3600 mile road trip i noticed that when the engine is under load, and between 2000 and 3000 RPM, the engine intermittently surges ~100-200 RPM about every 30 seconds. i can feel an instantaneous slight loss of power. the moment after the surge/slip occurs, its totally back to normal, and even when its happening the van drives fine, just w little surges. everything else w the tranny seems fine. no tranny codes.

when i downshift or accelerate to above 3000RPM it totally goes away. so, i tend to drive it at higher speeds to keep the RPMs up, but this was impractical going over the rockies in snow. any ideas of what this could be or how to troubleshoot?

ill likely use a local mechanic that i trust, but i really dont want to be told R&R tranny if not needed. trans fluid was replaced by vw knowledgeable mechanic about 2 years ago (17k miles). i think the problem has been around since i bought the van, but it is so slight a problem, and intermittent, i didnt notice the pattern until driving it so much all at once.

the day after we left on this trip, our home town of santa rosa, ca was hit with massive wildfires best described as firestorms.

i live in sebastopol on the far west side of this burn map, the winds are blowing 30mph towards the southeast today. we are so grateful for our emergency workers!

so our trip now will extend a few weeks through az and nm, then to the denver area for a month. the air quality back home isn't expected to be reasonable for another few weeks. i can work remotely so all is well.

im now loooking for housing in the louisville- gunbarrel area for my compact family of 3 (6y/o daughter) for october-november. also looking for location/help for van fixing (heater core r&r, lift and shocks). none of this is emergency repair, but it would make the 3000mile trip more cozy and smooth.

stopping in phoenix and santa fe w friends.
