Exterior / Backup camera install.
« on: March 09, 2018, 08:38:45 pm »
I bought one, but I’m not sure where to locate it. I could put it in the rear bumper but it’s so low I wonder about the placement? It is supposed to hook up to the backup lights so it comes on, but I’m wondering about just adding a switch on the dash (I have one blank) and manually turning it on? That way I could easily mount it to the license plate frame. I’d have to run an extra power wire along with the rca cable but it should be any harder?

Interior! / Cruise Control Repair
« on: February 04, 2018, 10:52:25 am »
Where to start.  I just had an engine rebuild.  When I took it into the shop CC worked fine.  Now it doesn't.  Doing some reading it seems the modules (located in the dash) go bad.  I can have it rebuilt for $65 which is pretty cheap, but I'm wondering how to diagnose the problem to the module before sending it in.  Anyone done this?

VR6 Engine tech / Need a new engine
« on: September 09, 2017, 11:11:40 am »
The moron is out and it's not looking good.  The VR6 is all gummed up and the shop doesn't know if they can really fix it.  It won't be much more to throw a new engine in it. The problem is, where to source an engine for a 2002 Weekender?  Thoughts?

VR6 Engine tech / "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced
« on: August 20, 2017, 08:18:03 pm »
Got a CEL today.  Only 200 miles after a major transmission/electrical update.  Today I drove just a few miles and had no problem. Parked the car.  When I went to start it, it cranked but wouldn't turn over. IT's done this in the past when warm, so I gat it a little gas.  It started but the CEL came on.  When I got it home I scanned it:
  • P0011 - "A" Camshaft Position - timing Over-Advanced or System Performance
  • P0300 Random Multiple Cylinder is fire Detected
  • P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfile Detected
  • P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfile Detected
  • P0306 Cylinder 6 Misfile Detected
  • P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfile Detected
I let it cool for a few hours and it's still hard to start and runs really rough.
Any ideas? Please tell me it's not the timing chain.

VR6 Engine tech / P0740 - Dead on the side of the road

Well crap. Driving down the hwy at 70 when the Rpms spiked to 5000 the to 1000. I pulled off and was leaking transmission fluid. Scanned the car it it said P0740 torque converter clutch circuit open. There is a massive fluid leak.

This van is starting to become a money pit.

VR6 Engine tech / HELP! Stuck in Provo
« on: June 19, 2016, 05:27:20 pm »
We were on our way from Telluride to Seattle. We stopped in Moab where it was >100 degrees.  When we started out again the car was very difficult to start and I got a check engine light.  The car drove fine.  I reset it and went on our way.  Upon restarting we got another code P0340 (Camshaft position sensor "A" Circuit) and a bunch of P030x codes indicating misfires.  We limped into Provo and the van is at the VW dealership.  Provo being Provo, everything is closed we're stuck here until tomorrow.

Doing some research I found this https://www.openbay.com/p0340/2002-volkswagen-eurovan which says it should be cheap! Three questions:
  • Is there any chance this is a timing chain?
  • What's the likelihood a VW dealership will have the part(s)?
  • Anything I should lookout for?

Thanks.

Interior! / What rattles and how to fix it
« on: February 27, 2016, 09:04:04 am »
My next project is to quiet down the interior a bit.  I thought we could use a topic on quieting rattles.  I don't have any suggestions yet, but I'll be tearing down my doors today to see what I can find.

Interior! / General electrical issues . . . Where to start
« on: February 19, 2016, 08:18:41 am »
I'm not much of  car guy.  Installing roof racks, and maybe new speakers comes close to my limit of expertise. However my 2002 EV (Bluwale) has a few nasty little electrical issues I'd like to start fixing up.
  • Horn doesn't work
  • Power mirrors don't work
  • Heated seats don't work
None of these are obviously huge issues so I've neglected to fix them.  I'm wondering if there is a good place to start with respect to fixing them? Might the issues be related?

Inline 5cyl Petrol engine tech / Transmission Replacement. . . .Fail?
« on: February 12, 2016, 10:09:14 am »
Strange question. Last year I swapped out the transmission.  The van was worked great since, but . . .I no longer have low?  I can't put it in 1 or 2?  The only gears I have are PNRD.  No low?  Any thoughts on why this might be?
