Inline 5cyl Petrol engine tech / Re: Turbo!!
« on: June 09, 2015, 11:19:36 am »
As a diehard turbo guy I have thought about this many times.  The conclusion I have come to that if I am going to go to that effort I might as well go TDI and be done with it.  I think the TDI better fits the use of our EVC.  Now if I had a sweet eurovan like one of yours that I was going a little more street with I think a 250 hp 5 cyl 5 speed would be a very fun ride.

How old is the timing belt? Did the mechanic pull the cover and inspect it for cracks?  The 5 cylinder is an interference engine in the 95s.  We changed ours immediately after purchase along with doing a full tune up and fluid change.

On the spare you could go cheaper just know that it is not going to get you back home from far away and you will have to stop at a tire shop ASAP.

From reading on Yahoo and other places it sounds like the Hella cruise control modules used on our vans is prone to failure.  Mine gave up the ghost about 2,300 miles from home last summer and made for a long trip back.
The symptoms that my cruise displayed was that at first it would take a couple of times for it to catch and then it would not work until I cycled the van on and off, and then it just quit working all together.

So I found out the the module on my 95 and probably most other years is above the glovebox almost at the center where the latch is.

To get to it I removed the Glove box which was held in by 8 screws inside of the box, a bolt on the side of the dash, and a connector for the lamp. I also removed the passenger side vent.  The vent fins should pop off and then there is a screw  to remove the housing.

With the glove box removed and the vent removed you can see the module through the vent hole and I reached up underneath to get at the two screws holding the module down.  I used a 1/4" ratchet with a philips bit in it to get the screws.  Then just unplug the module.

To get it fixed I sent the module to Module Master is Idaho.  It was about $75 to get it fixed.  I sent it out on a Friday and the next Friday when I got home from work it was waiting for me.  Put it all back together and it worked great.
Now I can stretch out and go in back and make a sandwich while the cruise does all the work  ;D

CaveVan Stuff / Ebay / Craigslist Section

Hi Cole,
How about a spot to put good finds of Vans and parts from Ebay and Craigslist?

I'm in!  ;D

I've been meaning to figure out how to convert these with domestically available parts. Just not enough time in the day for everything!

My one hesitation with the true VR6 manual that only came behind the 12v is that it's so rare and hard to find.mif you ever break it you could be SOL for a long time while sourcing a replacement.

Definitely want to see how this goes.  I went with a 95 because it came with the manual but the extra HP of a 24v VR6 would be fun.

Cole,
That is why you buy a spare when you get a chance and put it in a tote.  This is also away to almost guarantee that the one you have will never fail.

Exterior / Re: Which awning to get for EVC?

No it does not, I mounted it as far forward as possible yet still be able to attach the legs to the van and not interfere with the passenger door.

I have been happy with our BFGs ATs so far.  A little noiseier on the highway but I am slowly doing Fat Mat everywhere and the wheel wells I have done are much quieter.  I fit 225/70/16 on ours after the lift and they work but it is tight.

I put a 10' Fiamma F45S on our EVC this spring and love it.  We had the original Carefree on there and never used it because it was a pain to use.  I think the 10' fits great and the added area of coverage is nice.  The best part was that I was able to modify the Fiamma brackets and use the rivet nuts from the Carefree so my install was super easy.

I looked and looked at other options and hanging out with the Vanagon guys saw what they used.  Although not cheap, the Fiamma is just so easy to set up and can be done by one person very easily in less than 5 minutes.  We tend to travel like vagabonds and rarely spend more than two nights in one location.  This means I look for camping gear that is quick set up and tear down, why we bought an EVC to start with.

Also like Cole said not having to pack it is a big deal to me.  One of our goals is to be able to camp without having to put anything outside of the Van. When we are packed the only thing I have in the area behind the back seat is our bags with our clothes and only thing on the floor is the beer cooler strapped to the back of the passenger seat. We can stop, pop top and be sleeping without ever opening the van up or going outside. Basically we can sleep in a parking lot and not have to put things outside or feel cramped by keeping things in the van. So anything I can strap or bolt on and not have inside is even better.

Here are the best picks I have so far.  Let me know if you need a certain angle or dimension and I can grab it when I get home.

Any one have one of the cup holders that is on the floor from a later model Eurovan.  My 95 does not have one and I would love to retrofit one in there.
Thanks,

Any one headed out to the Bus Benefit at Camp Blodgett in West Olive, MI this weekend?  Mostly an older VW group but they are all very welcoming to the Eurovan crowd and we have had a great time at past events.  Good friend of ours band, Rootstand, is headlining on Sunday.

I think it just needs a pinstripe or something to break it up a bit but not a bad color and from the pictures it looks like a pretty decent re spray.

That blue looks good.
