1. The van was running (I say was because I have it semi taken apart)
2. I looked up some VR6 chain noise videos on YouTube but the van doesn't sound like that
3. No other work has been done.
4. Last oil change was about 2500 miles ago earlier this year. Oil is whatever the dealer uses.
5. Luckily I do have a VAG-COM and multimeter.

Once I finish with the dash I'll post the engine data. Thanks for the help!

Did you have a code for the cps? Isn't there 2 (exhaust and intake) sensors on the 24v? Sometimes a cam sensor code can be an indication of a chain problem. Replace the sensor first and make sure the code clears then do the valve cover gasket.

I didn't realize there were two sensors for the 24V. I just asked the ECS Tuning live support what I should get.

I have these codes:

Address 01: Engine        Labels: 022-906-032-AXK.lbl

I found one of the hoses with "fixed" with electrical tape. Given that my dad only gets the car serviced at the local dealership, it was somewhat surprising to find.

VR6 Engine tech / 24V valve cover gasket DIY? Cam Position Sensor?
« on: May 20, 2016, 04:41:15 am »
I'm quite new to wrenching on cars - any existing DIYs for the T4 (AXK)?

I have the Bentley manual on DVD but I can't find the section where this would be mentioned.

So I have the valve cover gasket, cam position sensor, and the engine filter. Not sure where I should look in the Bentley manual or otherwise for advice.

Interior! / Cupholder disassembly advice
« on: May 20, 2016, 03:57:13 am »
On my 2001 I'm having trouble removing the lower cup holder, I removed the two screws on either side but I'm not sure if I lift up or remove from the side. Any advice?

EDIT: This is embarrassing. It came out, just had to use a bit of force as something sticky was holding it down.  :(

Any update?

...tapped out with just a thumb

Soon, I just got back to the van last week (this is my parent's car, I live thousands of miles away).

The issue that's holding me up is that the battery terminal is attached quite firmly.

My intention is to strip the interior completely, apply sound deadening (Dynamat) and copious amounts of closed cell foam (Second Skin Audio).

I'd want something like the OEM pattern here: http://www.cavevan.com/forum/index.php?topic=311.msg2081#new
For MV owners perhaps the rail would be a good idea as well.

Interior! / Floor Heating Vent and Flooring Options

Looking to replace the worn out carpet in the back.

The OEM vinyl option appeals to me. The railing would be great too.

Here's an image for the full length heating vent. I despise the asymmetrical look of the floor with just the single black vent sticking out.

Anyone know where to get the flooring or vent?

Sounds great, I'd possibly be interested for a contiguous flooring option for the GLS w/captains chairs.

Would it be pre-cut for seats, heating vent, etc?
Are different patterns available?

I've ordered the 27mm front and 28mm rear bar. Not sure when I'll get either part.

I took apart my dash about two years ago due to the heater core failing. The heater core is buried behind the flaps, down in the vent's plastic box of hell. While I was in there I covered the flaps, which were still functional. The foam was sticky and disintegrated when I touched it. My thinking is that moisture, especially any moisture with radiator fluid vapor, just kills that foam.

Are there any tubes and/or solenoids I should replace while the dash is apart? I intend to replace the dashboard support beam as well - I'm very nervous about that one!

I bought the foam recommended on 1705.net. I figured I might as well since the dashboard support beam is coming out anyway.

+1 on the back latch mod...   I really like the automatic opening / closing doors on the dodge caravan / chrysler town and country.... And I think there was a mercury minivan in late nineties that also has this feature.   Wireless activation of open/close mechanism by a keyfob though in newer dodge minivans is Sooo Freaking nice... And convenient, and impresses people too!!

I wonder if we could just take the mechanism out of a BMW e39 touring or similar car and pop it into ours.

Ideally I wish we could work with GoWesty or a similar T4 outfit to work with Stabilus to make a power hatch retrofit possible. Their Powerise system (used in most OEM applications) would work great.

There are some kits here.

I think this is a possible retrofit. One would need to retrofit an additional rfid/nfc chip into the keyfob or have and extra rfid/nfc chip on the keychain. While we're at it lets retrofit electric sliding doors: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:G743AviPT4YJ:www.vwt4forum.co.uk/showthread.php%3Ft%3D181725+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

He used to have a video on YouTube but has since taken it down.

I think the chances of a VW T6 launch are quite slim.

VWoA will probably push the new 3 row crossover currently in testing: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1029288_2017-volkswagen-3-row-suv-spy-shots

VR6 Engine tech / Re: What else should I do at the same time?
« on: May 03, 2016, 02:12:16 pm »
What's a related code? Via VCDS I'm aware that there are misfires on at least one cylinder. I don't have an autoscan on me, and the last autoscan was months ago. Oil changes are done about every 5000 miles.

Its 24V.

At 150k mi should I do a complete rebuild or wait longer?

So because the engine swap idea kind of fell through - mainly due to lack of knowledge on my part - I'm just going to do the fall back option of maintenance.

Here's what's in my ECSTuning cart right now - along with my reasoning for it:
1. Timing Chain kit - I'm past 150k mi
2. Valve Cover Gasket - dealer said it was bad
3. Water Pipe Kit (thermostat housing too)
4. Spark Plugs
5. Thermostat - it'd feel weird to replace the thermostat housing and put the old thermostat back in
6. Coolant temperature Sensor (green top) - van was having problems starting while hot
7. Intermediate Timing Chain Gear - $117 from ECS - wish I could just have it 3D printed!
8. Serpentine Belt - this was done 50k mi ago - but if the engine has to come out for the timing chain anyway
9. Water Pump - not sure this is necessary

What am I missing? Should I do the head gasket while everything is open? If the priority is the valve cover gasket and spark plugs, does it make sense to do the rest? The van throws two codes P0171 and P0411.
